Mastering the Mix: How Landscaping Unites Carpentry, Tiling, Bricklaying, and Gardening Skills

Stacey Swetnam’s journey in landscaping is truly inspiring. She began her career in the funeral industry, gaining skills in stonework, machinery operation, and garden maintenance at a cemetery. Driven by her entrepreneurial spirit, Stacey founded her own garden maintenance business, Legacy Gardens.

Initially focused on garden maintenance, Stacey’s commitment to quality work and networking led to significant contracts, including strata garden maintenance. Her ambition was to venture into landscape construction, prompting her to pursue a mature age apprenticeship through TAFE NSW (Certificate III in Landscape 

Stacey’s success also stems from aligning with top-tier landscape businesses and suppliers. Her apprenticeship with Harrison’s Landscaping exposed her to high-end projects, emphasising the impact of premium materials like tiles, timber, soil, and plants. Stacey values these relationships, often promoting these businesses through social media, fostering a collaborative industry community.

One of Stacey’s most rewarding experiences in landscaping is witnessing project transformations from initial consultations to completed masterpieces. This journey from concept to completion fuels her passion.

Often the sole female on-site, Stacey’s unique perspective inspired her to support other women in trades. She founded the podcast “Tradie Lady Talk,” providing a platform for female tradies to discuss their challenges and achievements. Her advocacy earned her the Tradesperson of the Year title at the 2023 NAWIC Awards.

 

Being a female tradeswoman has its challenges and advantages. Stacey often faces scepticism about her capabilities but proves her skill through meticulous attention to detail and professionalism. The COVID-19 pandemic, with more clients working from home, has increased appreciation for her work. Women in trade are now seen as assets and industry leaders.

Stacey’s organisational skills shone during the NSW Helping Hand Day, where she led landscaping efforts with exceptional planning and execution. Her dedication to learning highlights that landscaping involves diverse skills, including carpentry, bricklaying, and tiling.

Stacey’s achievements with Legacy Gardens and her industry impact are commendable, serving as an inspiration for others. Her passion for landscaping and the trade industry is evident in her work both on and off-site.
